I was trying to look online for solar panels for my home to take some of the strain off of using oil and electricity but I find it very hard to understand exactly how they are used.
Like one that I looked up is 100 watts…..is that like a light bulb watt? How many things can that power?
Is it really cheaper in the long run because the panels are very expensive?
If anyone has web sites that can explain this to me I would appreciate a link, or anyone to answer part of my question.

Okay, I was curious as to what profession installs (small) wind turbines and solar energy panels. I’m in carpentry right now and I am very interested in learning of such a thing. Wehn I mention small wind turbines I’m speaking of roof top turbines that generate electricity from kinetic energy.

how house is one of those homes that it one house split in the middle, i think its a duplex? w.e. its three bedrooms 1.5 bathrooms. generally its sunny. what power/size solar panel would we need to make even a small difference?

what kind? i have heard of the ones that are like solar thermal or w.e. they heat water with the power from the sun right? are those worth it, cost wise/environmentally etc? also the photoelectric or w.e. ones that turn the solar panel into electricity right? are those worth it, cost/environmentally? which would be better?

Does anyone know why solar panels for heating cost so much. They have no moving parts. They just get hot.

I mean the kind that are used for heating water and then pumped into the house.

donfletcheryh, are you telling me that you are using a system with 404 in it instead of water to move the energy? If that is the case, do you not still use much electricity to run the compressor.

I used a Killawatt meter on a refrigerator and found it used 150 in electricity a year. Convection of a panel, should be basically zero electricity right? The hot water rising is piped to use, and cooler water then flows up into the panel?

My house is approximately 2,500 sq ft and we use about 1800-2500 kWh/month. I live in a very sunny area and I am thinking about installing solar panels for water heating and electricity. I am just researching estimates, I am not ready to contact a dealer or contractor yet, but I really have no idea where to start. Any informative sites or answers would be greatly appreciated.

I’m wondering if you total up all the electricity a plant making solar panels uses in a year, the energy the workers take to travel to their jobs each day, the energy used to transport the finished product to consumers and finally the energy used to install them and then compare it to the energy all of these panels will produce during their 20 year life will anything be gained?

Or would be have been ahead to just not bother making the panels in the first place.
